We need to know if the site supports breeding populations or if it’s just a transient stopover for a few individuals passing through.
  • Watch for the “buffer zone” fallacy. Many schemes focus heavily on the managed area but ignore the surrounding landscape. If a certified field is an island of biodiversity surrounded by a sea of intensive, chemical-heavy agriculture, the connectivity is broken, and the certification is doing very little to support long-term survival.
  • Question the proxy metrics. Often, schemes use “indicator species” as a shortcut, assuming that if Species X is present, the whole ecosystem is healthy. This is a massive leap. We need to be careful about assuming a single metric represents the complex, messy reality of a functioning hedgerow or meadow.

We need to stop treating these standards as a finished product and start seeing them as a baseline that requires constant, skeptical interrogation. Real conservation doesn’t happen in a boardroom or through a sanitized PDF report; it happens in the field, in the margins, and through the uncomfortable work of measuring what actually lives there. If we want to stop the quiet collapse of our insect populations, we have to value the messy, unpolished truth of the survey over the clean convenience of a certificate.
