The 4th International INSECTA 2018 Conference took place in Gießen on September 5-7, 2018. About 250 participants got the opportunity to to meet, to talk, to discuss with people from 32 countries from breeding, production, science, politics, justice framed by 60 lectures and 40 poster presentations. At INSECTA2018 there was in addition to insects as food, feed and non-food the special topic for Insect Biotechnology with an own satellite meeting were scientific works from LOEWE -Center in Giessen were shown. Next year the INSECTA2019 will take place in Potsdam on September 5 and 6.
Two prizes were awarded: the VDI Best Young Scientist’s Presentation Award was going to Claudia Manzo (Lund University, Sweden) for the presentation „Edible Bugs in European Food Culture: a cultural analytical Approach towards overcoming the yuck Factor” and the PPM Best Poster Presentation Award was going to Lukas Paul Käßer (TH Mittelhessen, Gießen) for th presentation „Continuous Production of Antimicrobial Peptides in Insect Cells“.
The conference aims to give an overview of the state-of-the-art of insect technology and the prospects. Technological, political and ethical aspects are discussed.
It is joint-organized by Pilot Pflanzenöltechnologie Magdeburg e.V. (PPM) and Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) and held in Gießen, Germany. This year the LOEWE-Center and the Justus Liebig University Gießen are special partners. The topic Insect Biotechnology will get special attention.
